Today was our first day of walking the Abel Tasman Track from Totaranui to Wainui Bay, a total of 10.1 miles with 1730 feet of elevation gain. Our day started at 7:00 am with an hour and a half drive to Marahau where we then took a 2 hour water taxi ride to Totaranui. There aren’t docks at Marahau or Totaranui so we boarded our water taxi on land and were then towed by tractor into the water. When disembarking at Totaranui, we had to climb off the back of the boat and wade to shore, carrying our backpack, “trekking” bag and shoes.

The route from Marahau to Totaranui was through the Tasman Bay and, with the high winds this morning, was like a 2-hour ride on Disney’s Guardians of the Galaxy attraction with a lot of jarring drops as we rode the swells. It was a wonder no one got seasick, but what a way to start our adventure!
The hike itself was stunning as we hiked through lush forests and along golden sand beaches, from one bay up and over its headland to the next, first to Anapai Bay then on to Mutton Cove and Whariwharangi Bay and finally to Wainui Bay where we then shuttled to our hotel for the night. All in all, a very satisfying day!
