November 11: Abel Tasman Track - Totaranui to Awaroa
Yesterday we hiked north from Totaranui to the end of the Abel Tasman track. Today we hiked south to Awaroa Bay. First though, we were shuttled back to Totaranui via a narrow, winding inland road (typical New Zealand rural road, we’ve been told).
Our route today was a short, easy 5.5 miles with less than 1,000 feet in elevation gain. The views were even more spectacular than yesterday and the weather was absolutely perfect for taking it all in! This part of the track is known as the Rata Trail. We ascended the headland to Goat Bay and Waiharakeke Bay before fording the large tidal crossing at Awaroa Inlet.
Before heading out into the inlet we put our hiking shoes and socks in a large bag and stuffed them in Rich’s backpack, replacing them with water shoes we had brought specifically for this purpose. It took us at least 20 minutes to cross the inlet, at times ankle deep in mud or knee deep in water. What an experience! Thank goodness there was a foot washing station at the other end. From the inlet, we then made our way along the beach to our lodging for the night.

| I’ve been fascinated by this plant since I first saw it yesterday. From afar, it looks like some type of palm tree, but I think it’s actually a giant fern. Lovely! |
